iD Presidência Áustria

The logo for the 2006 Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU is the work of the Dutch architect and designer Rem Koolhaas. He and his think-tank OMA originally came up with the idea of reassembling the colours of the EU countries’ flags in a “bar code” during a brainstorming session in 2001. Theme of the brainstorming: representing Europe’s diversity and unique identity in visual form. The bar code unites the EU Member States in a single symbol.
The European Union is characterised by ongoing development, dynamism and movement. This is reflected in the design of the bar code. The original 2001 design representing the flags of the then 15 Member States was thus adapted in 2004 to incorporate the flags of the 10 new countries joining. The bar code as the Austrian Presidency logo now depicts the flags of the EU-25, arranged according to the geographical location of the Member States from West (left) to East (right). It is a symbol not only of the European Union and its Member States, but also represents Europe’s diverse, colourful character.
Koolhaas’ bar code has not been used officially since its conception. This colourful symbol of Europe now has its official premiere as the logo of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2006.
