Bin Laden

In the depths of an unknown sea, Osama Bin Laden dives at last to the underworld. If hell really exists, that will be his final destiny. A sense of relief travels around the world, knowing that someone so evil ceasses to exist with the hope of a righteous flame in the eternity of death he worshiped so much. Bin Laden was a black symbol of mankind's evilness, high-beast of a cruel reality that dared to fall upon us. His death suits him well, not because of his own practice belief, but as a symbolic end to a cycle of incertainty, unhope and unclosed mourning.

Yet, for an ungiven humiliation, his capture should have break way to an imprecedented trial, accused of so many crimes against Mankind. This option however, would be more harmful than his death. Lets suppose that, as Saddam Hussein, he'd be imprisioned and led to trial. From here on so many complicated questions would arise. Where to keep him jailed - in Pakistan or Afganistan? Extract him to Guantánamo? How to control the rage of his followers? We would witness a drastic snowball of confrontation and violent events, making any place dangerous. The risk would be too high, not only within parts of the islamic world, mas also the possibility of a spontaneous and growing movement across the US against american citizens of muslim faith. Cenarios of verbal and physical intolerance could outbreak within communities, and be a such a security threat as 9/11 itself, and of potencial national degradation.

The only viable option was this one: find and eliminate. The final judgement would have to be executed in the that exact encounter moment. By approving this solution, President Obama took a high risk, where years of search and recent months of clear identification, led to the unfolding event that the United States was so eager to accomplish in order to close the mourning, breakaway the individual and collective insecurity threat, to shout out loud a historic victory.

But, the end of a symbol is not the end of the threat. Because Bin Laden's death doesn't mean the extinction of Al-Qaeda. I will go as an inspiring structure that showed times too many, the ability to execute terrorism threats and actions in almost any place around the world. It's a real incarnation of James Bond's evil enemies, and it's been proven that reality overcomes fiction.
It's a victory for freedom and democracy. A crucial battle won in this fight against terrorism.

Of you Osama, we wil not drop a tear, or one single sorrow. Neither here in the West, nor among the flowering change of the Arab Spring. Your first defeat was in Tunisia and Egypt, now in Yemen, Bahrain and Syria: they're shouting freedom, claiming for democracy. Allah will have no mercy, and then, before Him, you will find the Truth and the fair penalty in the eternity of inexistence.

After 18 days of struggle and democratic urge for change, Mubarak at lasts resigns as President of Egypt.

Today is the day of victory, of joy. The victory of reason and the people. A victory for Egypt. A historic event as a beacon of hope that shines everywhere, meaning that change is possible, that freedom and justice can be met. That a new beginning is a bright tomorrow.

Revolution in progress

Is this a spreading revolution similar to 1989 in Eastern Europe? Is the end of Hosni Mubarak's regime a defining moment like the fall of the Berlin Wall?
The people of Egypt, with courage and determination, are taking action for freedom and change. Historic days are these, starting in Tunisia and spreading through most of the Magreb and Arab countries.
But the vital question is this: can the values and forces of democracy take its rightful place?
This is a revolution in progress, with an outsanding regional and worldwide relevance.
The "West" must show much more support.
Let's hope for a brighter future. Let's hope for their chance for change.

Broken world

Photo: Mohammad Sajjad/AP

This is a picture of a broken world, so powerful and so painfull. Its graphic monstrosity is yet another reminder of a reality that so many of us tend do forget, or even despise. These children from flodded Pakistan, first shown on The Guardian, are an offense to every thing one can hold as sacred. It brings everlasting questions of why and what for; how can one help, understand the meaning of things, cope or accept facts and events of continued amounts of unfairness, injustice, disregard, selfishness. Every drop of sorrow and outrage that anyone may feel is nothing - nothing - compared to what these and other victims face every day, worldwide, with hunger, disease, war, fear, without home and hope. We share the same world, but we still live worlds apart...

—

War, what is it good for?

"Violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problem: it merely creates new and more complicated ones."
Martin Luther King Jr

No matter what, war has and always will be the worst of men. One can defend or question the morality of war, even its justice and legality. But in the end, one of the natures of the human condition cries out so loud by holding such actions with so intense violence, destruction and murder.
The vision of a common good with the loss of the few to save the many can in ways be regarded as acceptable as it is unacceptable. The true meaning of life has no respect in any corner of the world, for only power is the ultimate choice, only vengeance is the highest standard. While mankind persists, having the right or not, to engage into actions and reactions of war, the belief of an evolving species will always be left behind. War, terrorism, or any kind of violent offense against someone, is the upmost way of demonstrating how ugly we are, of how frightening we can act. War and violence will persist as long as evil lives within us.
The fight for war is in many cases the wrong answer. The fight for peace has to be always the right action. Easier said than done, the variables that lay before us are dreadfully challenging. The right to defend ourselves cannot help us avoiding the "difficult questions about the relationship between war and peace, and our effort to replace one with the other" as said by President Obama on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, that I advise to read or watch for his vision of war and peace, the truths and nature of both, and the questions he unfolds trying to find ways to understand the need and the way to conduct war.

I raise these questions. Can wars be just? Can it be a means to achieve a just peace? How to fight with honor and respect? Is that possible? How to avoid the loss of people's lives and save broken societies that war brings upon them?
The undeniable truth is that the codes of war are frequently broken, because even in the best effort to avoid it, war is simply war. There is no such thing as a clean war, a simple war, a deathless war. In war we hate, in war we kill, in war we die. Mistakes are made, atrocities are committed, collateral damages happen. That is the terrible reality of war. Because wars between armies have always gave way to wars upon people, who suffer the most in their innocent or neutral side. War is the power over life and death.
The romanticized wars never happened. It is the ideology behind those conflicts that drive men into battle. The pursuit of objectives are most likely to find means that bend the notions of legality, ethics and sanity.
War is no video-game. It isn't an adrenaline addiction, rising when some feel the thrill of combat forgetting or disregarding the victim's horrifying pain in their struggle for survival.

This fight in Afghanistan has been going on for too long. It is history repeating. The XIXth century British army failed. The XXth century Soviet army failed. The XXIst century US and allied armies walk to failure. These Afghan War Logs provide us facts and proof of how bad and how wrong a war can be faught, on how political strategies are often misguided, on how war is ultimatley the final standing point of a killing machine that brings no results. The way to end this war must be put in practice. The concepts that the West upholds are falling every day with every soldier and every children wounded or dead.
The fight for freedom and justice is paramount when we engage against the Taliban, a clear and present danger to Afghan society, specialy to women. And against Al-Qaeda as a worldwide threat. But if we lose our integrity and our values, half of the enemy's struggle has already won. Iraq and Afghanistan are the living dead proof of that. What have these wars been good for?

The Iraq Inquiry

I've been following the Iraq Inquiry since the beginning in the end of 2009, and all evidence and statements made never cease the idea of a bad judgment, a wrong plan and a political mistake of global proportions to go forward along the USA in the illegal invasion of Iraq. Even if the highest senior leaders of Her Majesty's Government, such as Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, or Jack Straw and Alistair Campbell continue deluding us with rhetorical arguments, the fact is many others - military and intelligence officers, legal advisers, and so on - heard at this very inquiry, have presented different views, facts and figures that corroborate injustifiable reasons and options to go to war and a mislead campaign to win it. This is still what comes out as common feeling, enhanced by yesterdays' statements by former MI5 boss Baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller, and in particular the obvious backdraft effect of Britain's role in the Iraq offensive that led to the increased risk of terrorist attacks in the UK, with 16 avoided and one accomplished.

The big question here is what will overcome from these hearings on the final report. This inquiry is not a court, but will it be capable to assemble sustainable documented proof to charge the ones responsable and hold them accountable?
This, as always, is a political game, and it's a nasty one.

—

Eyjafjallajokull April.17 2010 from Jonmundur on Vimeo.

The unpronounceable vulcano is the latest villian that insists on helping the crisis and avoiding the recovery. For how long can this endure? It's another sign that things must change in a global economy and society. The way we travel - this stands out for a better railway system; the way we transport goods and are overdependent on foreign products when some (like food) could be produced in every country.
Just imagine if the Iceland vulcano continues in eruption for months as it happened many decades ago, the disruption that causes is a grey future. This is another chance to new thinking solutions instead of quick band-aids. Let's hope that the ashes don't cloud our leaders.

I want to hope

This may be the last day of the rest of our lives as we know it. From here on lies the chance or the failed opportunity to change the future path of the world. There are too many signs against us. There's still too much blindness among us. There is too much at stake for our planet: security, economy, survival. A common threat needs common action - countries, governments, companies, people. To avoid the dangers of a changing tomorrow, everybody must engage today.
I want to hope that it can start today, don't you?

Hopenhagen

LET'S TURN COPENHAGEN INTO HOPENHAGEN
Hopenhagen is a movement, a moment and a chance at a new beginning. The hope that in Copenhagen this December – during the United Nations Climate Change Conference – we can build a better future for our planet and a more sustainable way of life. It is the hope that we can create a global community that will lead our leaders into making the right decisions. The promise that by solving our environmental crisis, we can solve our economic crisis at the same time.
Hopenhagen is change – and that change will be powered by all of us.

A queda

Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story

Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.

Inspired by Nigerian history and tragedies all but forgotten by recent generations of westerners, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novels and stories are jewels in the crown of diasporan literature.

Neda

The death of Neda Agha-Soltan has become an iconic voice (and Neda means voice in parsi) and image for this iranian "revolution". An innocent young woman, beautiful as only persian women can be in the words of Marco Polo, lost her life by the hands of a regime that holds its own survival as most sacred.
The power of image and technology struck this dreadful moment as a symbol of a fair fight for truth, justice and democracy. Iran, at its 30th Islamic Revolution anniversary, stands on a turning point that can define its future and the whole Middle East.
Our thoughts and prayers for Neda, and the iranians, must come with the changes they urgently need.
"Don't be afraid Neda", said her music teacher that was with her in those final minutes. We must not be afraid. We must choose hope over fear. We must stand for truth over lies. We dare to speak life over death.
